Microblading For Eyebrows

By Debbie Miller, CPCP

Social Media Has Created A Craze For Eyebrows

From celebrities sporting gorgeous full brows to magazines promoting products to create bold, beautiful brows, there is no end to the desire for perfectly shaped and styled eyebrows. The consumer demand always gives rise to new innovations, and a current major trend in the brow enhancement market now is microblading. This is a manual method of brow tattooing for hair stroke simulation, by using ultra-fine needles to implant pigment into the skin to create tiny "hairs" to fill in the voids, create symmetry in shape, and add fullness.

CONTRARY TO SOME MEDIA MISINFORMATION, HAIR STROKE SIMULATION VIA PERMANENT COSMETIC TATTOOING HAS BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS.

I have been performing hairstroke brows since 2002. Granted, the tools and needle sizes, along with highly artistic advances in design and placement of the "hairstrokes" has evolved greatly since then. Today, with a properly trained technician, it is hard to tell that they aren't real hairs. However, there are a number of factors that influence the healed result, and not every skin type is a good candidate for this process. It is critical that you choose a technician that has a full range education of every aspect of cosmetic tattooing, not just a few days training in microblading. When researching a technician, you should be looking for proof of credentials from a legitimate permanent makeup academy, a secondary certificate in Microblading, a local agency license or permit to conduct business as a permanent makeup artist, and a blood borne pathogens certification.

CURRENT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO THE UNSUSPECTING CONSUMER IS OFTEN COMPLETELY UNTRUE.

At our clinic we are seeing, on average, 4-6 clients per week that need extensive correction and removal of badly botched microbladed eyebrows. In most areas this technique is coming in under the radar of regulation, and not being recognized as cosmetic tattooing, due to creative and unethical marketing. I see articles almost daily about microblading, and some of the information being provided to the unsuspecting consumer is often laughable, and often outright lies.  I read an article a few days ago shared on Facebook about Madonna having microblading. It was so obvious in the photo that her brows were filled in with regular brow makeup- but attach a trend to a celebrity and people think it's gospel.  Having this procedure done in someone's home or the back room of a nail salon should be a "run, don't walk" get out of here NOW red flag. There is blood and body fluids involved in ANY form of cosmetic tattooing and diseases such as hepatitis, herpes and AIDS are spread via contact with blood. Proper sterile tools and clean room protocols are essential for your health and well-being.

MICROBLADING IS BROW TATTOOING.

Let's be perfectly clear here: the pigment is being implanted into the reticular layer of the dermis and will last 1-3 years, just like brow tattooing done with the machine method. It tends to fade faster simply because there is a very minute amount of pigment going into the skin with each little hair stroke, versus a more filled in shaded brow. I can perform hairstroke brows on 2 clients, one with a machine and one with a microblade hand tool, and you would not be able to tell the difference when it is healed.  There are many more layers of critical information before you and the technician should decide if this is the perfect technique for you. We do a thorough consultation with each new potential client to ensure that you are well informed and can make an educated decision before committing to a specific look or "trend".

DON'T BE FOOLED BY PHOTOS.

Most of the pictures, including many of my own, are taken immediately after the procedure, not months later after a full healing and touch up. People are busy and don't like to come back just to take a picture after they are healed and happy with their new procedures. At Newport Permanent Makeup, we are dedicated to excellence, integrity and professionalism in every aspect of our business. Having professional integrity, educating our clients, and giving you value for your investment, is at the cornerstone of our success.
